Goodbye walls?

    Goodbye walls?

I am actually amazed that walls in my room are still standing... I'm assuming that this room was designed in the 80s,  because it has horrible, fake wood paneling. My thought for a couple years has been to take the walls down, but luckily one section of the wall isn't properly connected to the other and if I peel it back I can see nothing behind it, literally, because the people who built the home didn't put up real walls first, they simply put the 1/8 inch wood paneling right over the wooden beams! This might be more common than I think, but I'm not sure exactly sure what the best way to go about getting to the part of all this where I can paint.

My friend told me it would be relatively easy to take down the wood panelling and buy some type of wall from Lowes that screws right in to the beams, but she didn't say if she meant drywall or something else, if there is any other type of wall to put up.

Another option is either covering the grooves in the wall and painting over that, or simply putting up wall liner. I don't know how much work it would take to cover the grooves and I know remotely nothing about wall liners. If anyone knows how much time and effort these certain methods, or different methods take please let me know.

(Just a side note, this little project will probably be done by 2 very determined teenagers, one being myself. Ease would be appreciated, slightly because money is an issue, but I want it to look very good when it's finished, and I want it to last for a long time and look like a real wall if at all possible.)
