Should newly installed, not yet finished hardwood floors go SQUEAK SQUEAK SQUEAK

Should newly installed, not yet finished hardwood floors go SQUEAK SQUEAK SQUEAK

We have very reputable, A-rated floor guys working at our house this week.  They pulled up our nasty carpet.  There was some hardwood underneath, and a lot of plywood.  DH & I expressed our concerns about how squeaky the floor was before they started and we were assured they would take care of it.  Mid-afternoon on the first day, I had to go out for several hours to take care of things at my kids' school.  I came back to find all the "prep" work done and the floor boards all laid, but not nailed, into place.  The workmen assured me that they had nailed down all the squeaky spots they could find on the subfloor.

Next day, they nailed in the hardwood flooring and spread a layer of wood filler all over it.  (Is that right, by the way?  It looks a mess, but I guess it will look better after sanding?)  Now we wait until next week for sanding and finishing, BUT-- the floor is squeaking like mad.  It's awful.

Foreman came out today and assured me the guys had done all they could to fix the squeaking before they put the flooring down.  They will, supposedly, go under the foundation next week and shim up wherever they can, but I shouldn't expect all the squeaks to disappear, because our subfloor is only 1x6.  Whatever.

Has anybody ever had the squeak level escalate dramatically like this, halfway through a flooring install?  I'm not sure how much of it is just the new wood sliding against each other (which supposedly the polyurethane will help alleviate?  True?) and how much of it is subflooring/joist noise.  And if that's the case, why the heck didn't these guys screw it down like we asked?

This is very stressful for me, because these guys are so well-rated on the List, yet so far I am so NOT IMPRESSED by the quality of their work.
