I have just purchased a home on the North West side of Chicago. Rather than spend weeks talking to contractors, I have decided to hold an open house for tradesmen. I am looking for

General Contractors
Plumbers
Electricians
Painters
Carpenters
Demolition Crew
Roofer
Hardwood Flooring Refinisher and Installer
Heating Installation

I am having an open house so that you can come over, walk through the property and provide me an estimate of repairs. They can be emailed to me after the open house. I will want three references of recent work as well as proof of insurance. When you arrive, I will give you a fact sheet on what needs to be done and you may make suggestions as well. Bring your tape measure, you are going to need it.

The house needs a total inside rehab (and totally is empty), from replacing some floors, refinishing floors, walls, all plumbing, electrical, minor roof repair and installation of new appliances, etc. The open house is from 10:00am to 4:00pm on Sunday, 18 October, 2009. The house is approximately 6100 West and 2900 North. I am going to live in the house so I am looking for quality craftsmen/tradesmen to do the job. I am not interested in flipping this, so quality of work is very important.

I found this company. Upon doing some research on them, I found out that they are not licensed in DC or in VA. There is a salesman named Cliff Small there and he is the sales manager (according to him). I looked him up on the Maryland Home Improvement Commission and I discovered that he does not have a MD salesman's license. I also found a web site called elegantfloorservicesisillegal.com. I can't believe that this company has been getting business through this web site! They will not get mine. Be careful of this company for they are unlicensed and illegal.

Wireless Cell Service Provider comparison

I'm looking to switch cell phone providers from Verizon - with which I've had for over 8 years - to a company that's less expensive but just as reliable.

Due to the current economic situation, I want to steer clear of anything having to do with extended contracts, so I'm seriously considering a Cricket phone. Has anyone had any serious issues with their Cricket phone in the South Central Kansas area???

This message is posted with me assuming that someone from AL prob moderates this board.

I was wondering what is the likelihood of a few additions being made to the list...I think it would be really helpful to have a sort of "tag" you could put on certain companies.(or even a "favorites" list)..for instance--

I am considering having my carpets cleaned.

I (of course) check the list and find the company that I should use based on reviews

I (of course) don't make any phone calls right away but next week decide I really need to get that scheduled.

Now I have to check the list all over again..to get back to the company that I chose last week to call.

Maybe I'm weird or maybe I just procrastinate too much. I'm wondering if other folks would find this helpful & convenient and if so, is this something that AL would consider? I know it would help me out.

I have been attempting to sue a dishonest Home Contractor for over a year.

The courts postpone, then suggest Mediation...which the contractors want to choose (at their leisure) Mediators and waste time.

Well, I have gotten to the point where I have nearly spent more than half of my (owed money) on

lawyers and associated costs. If I continue, it will be like throwing good money after bad!

If I drop my suit..where else can I post warnings (to the public) that would be seen in OHIO.

The contractors have much previous experience at being suied.

I have been through the BBB and the Attorney General's office, and RipOff Report , and Angies List.

Can someone suggest something?? Thank u!

How do you average the individual rattings to get an overall rating? I just looked at one company with 6 current ratings 4 A's and 2 D's.

If I figure A as 1, B as 2, etc I come up with 12 divided by 6 equals 2. or a B rating. But your overall rating was A??

Reading the bad reviews I think the D ratings were overly generous, but that's another issue.

Tent Rental?

We are planning an event at our modest home in December and are considering renting a couple of tents w/heaters for the event. The one quote we have received so far was extremely high--it was in line with a high-end venue rental fee.

Can anyone who has experience with tent rentals, catering and so forth in the greater Atlanta area tell us what exactly we need to focus on? For example, are tent liners really necessary?

Insurance Problems

We have coverage with AIG Insurance and have had a loss. The ajuster keeps coming up with reasons to delay settlement. I wonder if it has to with the Company's daily cash account, collection of interest on monies not paid.

Sexist Commercials

Is it just me or has anyone else noticed that the TV commercials for Angie's List show female workers for the positive ratings and male workers for the neagative ratings?

I get a little tired of the "stupid white man" in modern commercials.

I was taken aback yesterday morning when I saw in my inbox a message from Angie's List announcing the addition of medical professions to the database of consumer service provider reviews, even going as far as to offer member incentives for writing reviews.

I’ve been a big fan of Angie’s List ever since I bought our condo a little while back and needed numerous recommendations for HVAC repair, movers, hardwood flooring, carpet, locksmiths, and even travel agents. These recommendations proved to be invaluable, as I have yet to be dissatisfied with any of the work I’ve had done as a result. Angie’s List is a true asset in these areas.

Crossing into healthcare, however, Angie’s List enters a very gray area as far as the actual review process and the whole idea altogether. As of now, if a consumer has a dispute with a general contractor over a hardwood flooring project, the consumer can write a negative review. The contractor can then write a response to the review and can ultimately “resolve” the issue, though the negative mark may still remain on the report card to one extent or another. This check and balance mechanism probably greatly reduces incidences of the occasional irate consumer who tries to “get back” at a contractor over something that might not have actually been a big deal. Healthcare providers, on the other hand, are governed by federal law, specifically the HIPAA privacy laws, which ultimately leaves us defenseless against negative publicity of any kind. If a patient complains on Angie’s List that he or she didn’t like the implant I placed, by law I cannot comment on the situation because I am bound by HIPAA. In fact, I cannot even acknowledge nor deny publicly that a person is even an actual patient of mine! I’m sure the stickiness of the situation is obvious.

While great for professions that are not bound by privacy laws, I feel Angie’s List has no business including healthcare providers in their database. Stick with everything else. There’s plenty of other areas to keep us all busy. I’m interested to see where this goes.

Angie's List - Value diminished due to sluggish response?

Hi - new member here - wondering just how up to date the real list is. I submitted a report on 5/17 then sent a note to inquire if it had been lost on 5/22. I just now received a reply on 5/29

"To ensure accuracy and clarity, we use a screening process which adds a few business days to the time it takes for a report to be added to a company's service record. This time frame can vary depending on the day of the week that the report is submitted and the number of reports that we receive during that time frame. Lately, we have been receiving so many reports (about 500 a day!) that this process has become very backed up. We are really happy to be receiving so much feedback from our members, but it will take us a while to get used to this huge volume."

I am supposing that if my posts don't get up for weeks then others are too. The value to me in selecting a vendor is less about dated posts and more about how that vendor is performing now as recent as yesterday if at all possible. Not yet certain we are getting full value for the subscription at this rate.

Has Angieslist stopped operating?

I posted a report, it seems prematurely, about a big job I had done which developed several unresolved issues. I asked the List by email how to correct my mistake. I finally got a response saying I could just delete it and write a new one. I chose to do so, but cannot reach anyone at Angieslist. All emails sent to Angieslist comes back undeliverable--I've tried mutiple times, multiple locations. 4 days of email have come back undeliverable. Guess I'm stuck with having written a recommendation could make people think they should use this firm--and that would be a mistake.

Did their whole system shut down? Thanks for any feedback. Ell

We own our house here in Northern Virginia and also own a house in Denver that we rent. I looked on the FAQ to learn if I would have access to the Angie's List contractors ratings in both cities if I joined but did not find an answer to that question. It is 9:15 PM here in DC and apparently the Angie's List offices on the West Coast are closed - I tried to call their LA office to see if they could answer the question. So, I'm looking for an answer here this evening. If no responses, I'll call them tomorrow.

If I join, will I be able to view contractors in both the DC area and also in the Denver area?
